PERKS RANCH
HISTORY
Perks Ranch is located in Ogle and Winnebago counties of Northern
Illinois. The ranch was founded by Cam Perks and his family back in
1961, as a working horse and cattle ranch, thus the - brand. Over the
years as the ranch has expanded it has grown to approximately 2000 acres
of fertile rolling grass pastures, cropland and protected forests. Doug
Perks takes the lead with the cattle operations while brother Lachlan
takes the reins at the Cutting Horse division.
In the early days of operation the cutting horses got most of the
attention with the cattle side operating as a commercial cow calf unit.
However, in 1978 the ranch purchased their first foundation Hereford
females in the famous Northern Pump Co. dispersion. From that point
forward the complexion of the cattle division at Perks Ranch has made
rapid changes and improvements. Major female purchases from Imig
Herefords and others, along with replacements pushed numbers well over
150 registered cows by the late 1980’s.
In 1992, Tommy Coley took over the management of the cattle operations.
With the addition of some new genetics and new facilities things began
to run at full speed ahead, with the aim of developing a nationally
recognized seed stock cattle business.
In 1997 the nucleolus of today’s Perks Ranch Red Angus program, emerged
through select purchases of females from the famous Von Forell‘s
foundation herd of Wyoming Reds. The genetic base of these cows combined
with the power of RBJR Advance A709 has proven to be a successful
combination in the Red Angus industry and the beginning of the “Perks
Advancer” story.
In 2005, Craig Crutcher became manager of Perks Ranch. With the start of
new management the first thing that occurred was the sale of all mature
cows in both the Hereford and Red Angus herds.
At the present time Perks Ranch hosts two sales each year. A fall
“Select Hereford Female” sale with a “Performance Tested Bull” sale held
each spring featuring both Hereford and Red Angus herd bull prospects
and the best commercial bulls money can buy!
We have had much success at major shows across the country. Our breeding
program is proud to offer winning genetics for the purebred breeder as
well as the commercial cowman. We offer cattle that are selected for
traits, which effect profitability for our valued customers.
